Have been listening to your new CD this morning and love it. Gorgeous rich sound and everything lovely and clear. Just the two of you is a pleasure to hear the structure of the tunes laid out and explored with both of you listening to each other and playing off – wow! ... recording of the bass is just excellent; not too forward in the mix but putting in just the right bottom-end notes clearly and cleanly. The room sound is wonderful too. A lot of fabulous smoky atmosphere.
Just a joy all round. Your sax never sounded better and love Mark’s chords – not too far out but very interesting progressions.

Russ, I have listened to ALL of the tunes at [this site] and this is simply "sweet"!
The purity of the arrangements and playing makes for an exceptional listening experience.
I am not kidding you when I say that I cannot pinpoint a favorite of the tracks.
Every one of them is a favorite. They are all so unique in their own right and
the chemistry between you and Mark gives each tune a special warmth & vivid color.

You guys nailed it. I really like the boogie back-beat in "Sister Sadie" and being an old bass player,

This is a great selection of tunes and the playing is really first class all the
way through. The recording is not only fine jazz, but accessible jazz.
You have included standards from Ellington to The Beatles and it all sounds fresh.
"The Two Of Us" is a great selection and a favorite. It's good to hear your treatment.
Mark's comping and soloing are solid and your duo should certainly be of interest
to listeners, employers and music festivals next season.

Up front I must admit that even though I appreciate live jazz, I rarely listen
to jazz recordings. When I first began to listen to 'Steppin' Back', I'll admit
I didn't think the music would hold much appeal for me. However as the CD
continued to play, I was increasingly drawn in by the sound, and found myself
humming along with most of the tunes. I let the player repeat the CD for a couple
of hours. On the weekend we had a guest for dinner and thought to put your
music on as a nice backdrop to dinner. It sounded great and contributed
to a most enjoyable evening.
